Southern Plate via Omaha

Anytime I get lost while I'm driving I begin to sing Uneasy Rider by Charlie Daniels.

If you aren't familiar with that particular ballad let me give you a little tutorial on it.

In the song a young...um...gentleman is making his way out to LA...

That's Los Angeles not Lower Alabama.

...when he runs into a bit of car trouble in Mississippi.

Hijinks ensure and the gentleman is left with the understanding that the next time he travels to LA he will be going via Omaha instead of via Mississippi.

And why wouldn't you?

Last month Mom and I meandered over to Florence to see Christy Jordan of Southern Plate.

She held a cooking show where she showcased some of her favorite holiday recipes.

I know, I know...

What was I doing at a cooking school?

Hey! Just you wait!

She took us through an entire meal and provided samples of each item.

Some of the recipes she showcased were passed down to her from other people.

Like me, Mrs. Jordan comes from a long line of fabulous cooks.

Unlike me, Christy Jordan can actually cook.

Seriously, the meal I fed my family tonight..shudder!

Also like me, Christy Jordan is from the Huntsville area.

I've often wondered what would happen if you took Amanda from Kevin and Amanda (who is also from Huntsville) and Christy Jordan and put them in some sort of cage fight cook off.

I can just see the Macaroons (I'm sorry but I refuse to spell that word with only one O) flying now.

She had some great door prizes at the event but alas, we didn't win any.

Which is probably good because then I'd actually have to learn to use those appliances she was giving away.

And chances are my fantastic cook of a Mother already has them.

After every dish she cooked a cooking school student would come around with the samples.

Oh, the samples...

Each person also got a little recipe book with the recipes she cooked.

It tastes exactly like a pecan pie but instead of using pecans she uses pretzels.

Your just going to have to trust me on this.

It was crazy good.

It's more economical than pecan pie and people with tree nut allergies can go to town on it.

My only problem with it though is that when I make a pecan pie...

It's one thing I actually can make.

...I like to think that it's healthy because it has pecans in it.

I mean, come on!

Nuts are healthy!

Right?

So pecan pie is healthy!

Why do I hear crickets chirping in the background?

Anyway, you should try the recipe because it is great.

So, what does all this have to do with Uneasy Rider?

And after the Southern Plate event Mom and I got lost on the way back to Huntsville.

Stinkin' Google maps.

Google maps hates me.

I was driving and got super turned around and we ended up going down the same street three times.

It was a bit ridiculous considering Florence and Huntsville really aren't that far away from each other.

Well...

At least we didn't get into any altercations in bars like poor Charlie Daniels in Uneasy Rider.

If we had though...

It would have been worth it.

Because that's just how good that pecan less pecan pie was.

  1. here's the main difference between you and me. You go to a cooking show and are inspired to want to learn to cook. I go to a cooking show and think about all the other things I could be doing with this valuable time. Glad you had fun! And I can relate to getting lost...ALL the time in a city I grew up in.

  2. I bet your fancy I-phone has a navigation app - don't use the maps. Use the app where the lady tells you (sternly) when to turn, etc. Has saved my marriage!

  3. Oooh, that faux pecan pie sounds awesome. Then again, I'm a sucker for cooking. I'm also a sucker for getting lost. Google maps hates me. Hell, it still can't even find my house. I can't even tell you how many people have gotten lost trying to get to my house (which is in a very common, populated place, mind you).
