Cathedral Caverns, yes.

I went on a field trip with the second grader today to Cathedral Caverns State Park in Grant, Alabama.

Cathedral Caverns is a large cave system in Northeast Alabama.

Not naming any names but some people were nervous about the whole cave thing.

Some people were afraid that the cave would be too dark.

"You sellin' me out woman?"

Why, yes. I am.

To say the cave is in the middle of nowhere is an understatement.

The cave itself starts out rather inauspiciously.

As you stand outside it you can feel the cool breeze blowing out at you.

Inside its amazing how quickly it gets dark.

We walked for almost 3/4 of a mile to the very end of where the general public is allowed.

It recently underwent a 5 million dollar renovation so the walking trail is very nice.

Our tour guide was awesome.

Her name was Penny and she was a down home sort of gal.

The cave was much cooler than I thought it was going to be.

Not 'cool' as in temperature - although it was that - but cool as in 'that's really neat.'

There were giant stalagmites and stalactites.

Parts of Tom and Huck were filmed here.

The cave scenes obviously.

As we got deeper into the cave some people - again not naming names - wanted to stick right by Penny.

The cave had all kinds of crazy formations.

It also had more opportunities for me to curse the blasted camera on my iPhone.

All I did was try to take a picture.

Why did it turn us into cartoon characters?

Oh, well.

Back to the cave:

The tour guide said that the formations grow the length of a marshmallow every 100 years.

That's a long time.

Here was the area called 'the frozen waterfall.'

Their were all kinds of shapes in the formations.

This one looked like an alligator.

Kind of.

At the end of the paved pathway Penny turned off all the lights.

You couldn't anything at all.

Not even your hand in front of your face.

After she turned the lights off she warned us:

"If you're doin' anything ya shouldn't ya better stop 'cuz I'm gonna turn the lights back on"

Someone remarked:

"Glad we don't have teenagers or they'd be kissing!"

The eight year old looked at me and seriously asked me:

"Why do teenagers want to kiss?"

At his age it's a valid question.

A better one might have been:

Why haven't you been to Cathedral Caverns?

  2. I haven't been there since I was a child - you know, when those stalagmites were a marshmallow shorter. I should really take the family and go. Thanks for the reminder.
