The past week at our house has been pretty much complete and total chaos. The last month really. What with camp, travel, more camp, more travel, school starting, move, more travel, school starting for the other kid, and on and on. It's just been a general melee.
Melee not malaise because I think that means something totally different.
The nine year old's homework has been a mess - he has literally been taking an hour and a half to two hours to do his homework!
And don't be all 'oh, those squirelly teachers just assign too much homework.' Here's how it looks for him to do his homework:
4:05 Work
So, today I decided to buckle down and get the Claunch family organized. Oh, stop laughing. I can so be organized!
First off, I bought a big organization board. Just one of those three fold presentation things.
It's the thing I imagine carrying through an airport while I'm wearing a suit and heels because I'm a fancy businesswoman! And I'm off to pitch my idea in the big city. And I get to stay in a hotel on the company dime, maybe the city is San Francisco! Yeah, that's it! And I order room service afterwards because my day with clients has been so trying!!! Yeah! And then...Alright, Paula. Pull 'er back in...
Disclosure: I've never actually worn a suit and heels in an airport. Or pitched a big idea. Or been a fancy businesswoman. Bygones.

And don't be all 'oh, those squirelly teachers just assign too much homework.' Here's how it looks for him to do his homework:
4:00 Work
4:01 Ask for glass of water4:05 Work
4:06 Itch mosquito bite
4:08 Stare off into distance
4:10 Realize you have to go to bathroom
4:15 Work
4:17 Suddenly feel need to make laser sounds
Oh, the laser sounds at our house...
4:19 Wander off
4:25 Work
4:26 Itch another bite til it bleeds
4:27 Ask for band aid
4:30 Get distracted by wandering toddler
4:40 Work
4:41 Get distracted by 7year old
4:45 Work
4:47 Feel the need to talk about blah, blah, blah..
4:50 And on and on and on...
"What is this concentration word of which you speak?"
There isn't much work that actually goes on!
I think, though, that a lot of that falls on me and how I run, or don't run, the house. I'm the worst about not knowing when stuff is due, who has what when, etc. It's melee, I tell you!

Here's how the organizational board turned out:
Claunch Connections...Awww, I'm just so clever. Here it is broken down into zones.
Zone One:
Calendar with all my important various and sundry dates on it. Mainly when the blasted library books are due. Let me tell you, if you don't send the library books back in you don't get to rent anymore and then it turns into 'the worse school day I've ever had.'
Zone Two:
World Map with our Compassion kids connected to where they live so we can remember to pray for them. Not that we'd ever forget but...oh, who am I kidding...of course we forget. |
The child's name, their birthday and who primarily writes to them.
Zone Three:
Their Bible Verses and Catechisms they need to learn for school for the week.
Look at James, getting away with no Bible verse next week. Slacker.
Zone Four:
Invites.
And then, taped on the door, the important 'out the door' notices. Otherwise I end up having to ask the minions all these questions a million times.
So...How do you keep your house organized?
Great idea!!! I have already discovered this week that I need to get all daily important information in one place!! I'm sure that I'll get around to complete a project like this in about....ummmmmmm......3.5 yrs!!
ReplyDeleteFor a few years I kept the information on slips of paper for weekly occurrences, notices for special events, and invites on the back of the front door- all hung using scotch tape and one incredibly strong magnet (if I could lift it to put something new under it). Every week I would move stuff up to the top from right to left (because that's how the door opened and what would be seen last as we went to open the door). And, still, we missed regular occurrences, events, and invites in the chaos that was- is - our lives.
