Back Bay Fishing

A couple years ago during Fall Break we meandered down to the Gulf Coast.

We went to Destin, Florida - it's a great beach town.

I always feel a little disloyal to the state of Alabama when we go there instead of Gulf Shores but...

I just like it better.

There I said it.

Are you happy now?

I like Destin better than Gulf Shores.

Maybe I'm wrong about it.

There are plenty of things that I know I'm wrong about.

Things I don't like that everyone else does:

Tomatoes, the movie Grease, and Shakespeare just to name a few.

But, Destin...

It's just our place, ya know?

I mean, it's actually a million people's 'place' but it's ours too.

We decided to go Back Bay Fishing while we there.

If you've never been I highly recommend it.

Back Bay Fishing is just like Deep Sea Fishing.

Well, except without the deep sea, the vomiting, and the excessively long trip out.

It's in the bay instead of the gulf so the water is nice and calm.

But the fish are still there.

And when you go with a guide you don't even have to bait your hook.

Isn't not having to bait the hook one of best things about being a woman?

Feminist fishermen all over the world just gasped...

We had to get to the dock before the sun was up.

It was cold but peaceful.

Even with these guys around.

My Dad and I went with my nephew and the oldest minion.

These punks got left behind:

I didn't feel guilty.

There were lots of big ol' seabirds out getting their breakfast.

And the large boats were heading out to the gulf.

We were in a small boat but it was plenty big enough for us.

Our guide stayed on his cell phone the whole time.

There was all kinds of drama going on his life.

It was something about a girlfriend and a pick up truck and a stolen something or other.

True Story.

There may have even been a Mama and a cheating ex-wife involved.

The sunrise was beautiful.

And then, in just a few, we were fishing.

And then we were catching.

The fish were mostly cobia, sheepshead, and red fish.

The fish could be a little slimy.

And a little bloody.

The boys loved it.

I loved it.

When we got back to the marina the guide hung the fish on this board.

They looked pretty impressive hanging up there.

The way they hang these fish on the boards, though....

Totally gross.

The guide took the fish and just...

Well...

He just thumped it up on the nail - right through the eyeball!

It was gross.

Gross but a great memory.

  1. I wish I had known about this Bay fishing you speak of! We did the whole deep sea fishing thing complete with rocky water and vomiting! There were 3 groups on board and each one had members crawling over and hurling off the side of the boat. Memories were made but I can't say they were great for everyone!

  2. It was expensive but SO MUCH FUN. I just can't get into deep sea fishing - too choppy for me.
