This post should really be called 'how to tell your kids they are going to Disney World' or some such.
Last month we decided to take the minions to Disney World.
Last month we decided to take the minions to Disney World.
Instead of telling them that they were going to Disney World I told them something quite different.
See...
It's just more fun to surprise them.
I mean...
When I was a kid my parents were constantly* telling me that we were headed to the grocery when actually we were headed to the zoo or some such.
So, I love the surprise factor.
About a week before the trip I told them that Billy was going out of town and they were going to get checked out of school early on Friday because they had dentist appointments.
Yep, dentist appointments.
Friday came along and I checked the boys our for their 'dentist appointment' but instead of driving them to the dentist I drove them to the airport.
My kids...
Basically they will believe anything I tell them. I guess that's a kid for you.
I told them that we needed to run by the airport because Daddy had forgotten something and we needed to ship it to him.
When they got out of the car I broke the news to them.
Here is the video or what ensued:
Surprisingly I got a few comments from people questioning whether or not this was a good idea.
Question One:
"Don't you worry that your kids will constantly be in an agitated state wondering whether you are really taking them where you said you were?"
Response: I never worry.** And before you are all "Wow! That's great! She isn't a worrier" know that what I gain in not worrying I make up for in being disorganized and lazy. So, maybe a bit more worry would be good for me.
Question Two:
"Don't you think learning to wait on something fun, like an upcoming trip, teaches kids patience?"
Response: Probably, but I never promised that I was doing this whole mothering thing perfectly. Or this whole punctuation thing because I'm really not sure whether a comma should have gone after the word probably.
So, the glee that was my kids after I told them they were going to Disney World was something pretty awesome to behold:
I love mirth.
So:
The Dentist
and
Disney World...
Apparently they are one and the same.

* In my mind this happened every Sunday. In reality it was probably a good bit less but I always remember things from my past as better than they actually were.
Here is a typical conversation with my brothers:
Me: Remember that awesome time we had the night we got lost on the way back from Tennessee?
Brothers: What? Do you mean the time the car broke down, we lost our wallets, got food poisoning and Mom yelled at us when we got back?
Me: Oh.
** I HATE FLYING. I will worry if I have to go on a plane.
I love to surprise my kids too!!!!
ReplyDeleteI am sure you had a blast. We took the fam to Disney last year at Thanksgiving and we had the best time ever!!
The **** around words on my blog make it where when people google those words my blog doesn't come up in their search. I probably don't have to add the **** because I think I have my blog set up where it is not searchable, because most people don't understand hurt children or therapeutic parenting and I get nasty comments from all these perfect parents that could do such a better job at this than me :), but I don't really want to take the chance of every single person typing in comman search stuff to come across my blog. Hope this answers your question. :)
You are hilarious, by the way.
Hope you had an awesome time at Disney. Can't wait to hear all about it. Now about those questioning your parenting choices - got one word for them. Killjoy. There are plenty of opportunities in the day to day doings to teach them about patience. Of course YOU already know that. :)
ReplyDeleteLook at it this way - you weren't one of those nimrods who told their kids that mom and dad had eaten all their Halloween candy, made a video of their reaction, and sent it to a talk show to be on TV. the kids went nuts and not in a "mirthful" manner. Have a great time in Orlando.
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy that I reared you not to worry! Another good thing you got from me!!! And Amen, to Emily's comments!
ReplyDeleteI had to come back and read this one because it is one of my absolute favorites for so many reasons. 1. because of your kids... just awesome and 2. your responses to the questions. just love. Oh and 3. the way you remember things better than they were. HA!
